In the seventies, 1 Inspector for 10 and 100% Inspection was the norm in India. With R&D in PTL’s genes, upgrade of Swaraj Quality was a continuous process from Day-1. I had read of Japan’s postwar Quality Revolution courtesy the teachings of Drs. Deming & Juran and had even gone ahead to add a statistician to our Quality Deptt. Did not even make a dent. Our rate of Improvement continued to crawl; nowhere near what had become routine with Japanese industry. I was on the look out for Dr. Juran’s tapes. It was in this process that I chanced to read of QIMPRO & its Juran connection on the morning’s Delhi-Bombay flight in India Today. Landed in its office in the afternoon when partitions were still being nailed; Suresh and I sat on packing cases. In the one-hour that we spent together, it became amply clear that our answer lay in Dr. Juran. I picked up Dr. Juran’s “Managerial Breakthrough” and ordered a set of his tapes. Our journey with Dr. Juran began on my return to Chandigarh. 22 CFT Teams working on 22 diverse Projects identified by the entire Management Group. 6 months to complete; Weekly monitoring by entire Group;. Results astounded everyone. Made it amply clear that TQM was not culture-specific to Japan, but equally doable in India. Our JV with Mazda of Japan added the next twist ; aggressive Goals of 30% Improvement year after year. It converted me into an evangelist for TQM with Suresh That bond between me and Suresh has grown stronger over the years. Dedication in 2004 by Punjab Technical University of its First Advanced School to TQM was a landmark in that journey. It is perhaps the only School of a Technical University focused on TQM. Ground covered by the School in its eight years of existence has also been fascinating: North-‘west QualTech Awards for TQM initiatives by industry; Week-end B.Tech and MBA Programmes in TQM for working Professionals; Short-term Programmes and the works. Marketing TQM in India is not easy. Full marks to Suresh for making QIMPRO into a live and vibrant Institution which has created a new culture in a whole host of large industry. May QIMPRO’s next 25 years bring greater success and glory.

Quality nuggets from Suresh Lulla. I was privileged to meet Suresh at the recent Asia Pacific Quality Conference and to obtain a copy of his excellent little book 'Quality Fables'. This presents numerous vignette case studies that illustrate quality principles. (These would each make an excellent topic for a #QualityMoment discussion at the start of a business meeting). Each vignette concludes with the key insights (163 in total). Here are a few of these zingers: - When you want to sell an idea to top management, speak the language of top management - money - [Thus] the head of finance can put a quality management initiative in steroids - Quality by Design can shut the hatchery that generates quality problems - For strategic planning we must schedule our priorities; for operational planning we must prioritize our schedule - Quality control is about corrective actions we take when sporadic fires break out; Quality improvement is about reducing chronic costs and poor quality. - Process incapability is legitimatized in the budget: inventory costs, inspectors, after-sales-service engineers! - The Cost of Poor Quality in any organisation is over 20% of total costs; and is usually at least equal to the profit for the organisation. - Adults like stories, not sermons. An excellent book!
