The internationally bestselling guide to better thinking used by tens of thousands of people - fully revised and updated. There is nothing more sad and wasteful than a roomful of intelligent and highly paid people waiting for a chance to attack something the speaker has said. With the Six Hats methods the fullest use is made of everyone's intelligence, experience and information. The Six Hats also removes all "ego" from the discussion process. The need for the Six Hats is based on an understanding of how the brain chemicals change with the mode of thinking. Using this method one major corporation reduced the time taken for multinational project discussions from 30 days to just two days. Argument is inefficient, ineffective and slow. Argument was never designed to be constructive. The parallel thinking of the Six Hats method is rapidly replacing argument around the world. From senior executives at major corporations like Siemens, NTT, Prudential (US) to four-year-olds in school. From Khmer villagers in Cambodia to senior government departments. For 2,400 years we have been content with argument which was never designed to be constructive. Discovering "what is" may not be the same as designing "what can be". |

The seminal book that introduced a new way of reasoning and decision making. "Dr. de Bono does not claim to be able to turn us all into Miltons, Da Vincis, and Einsteins. . . . The Muse never appears to most of us--hence the value of this book."--Times Educational Supplement |

Is thinking a matter of intelligence or a skill that can be taught deliberately? Can thinking be taught directly as a curriculum subject in schools?
Edward de Bono has done more than anyone to pioneer the direct teaching of thinking as a skill. In the USA and elsewhere around the world an increasing number of schools are putting thinking on to the curriculum. Research shows that even as little as seven hours' instruction can have a significant effect on the performance of pupils.
When this book was first published these matters were controversial. Today the teaching of thinking, thanks in large part to Edward de Bono, is firmly established in many countries as a necessary part of education.
Teaching knowledge is not enough. In order to survive and thrive in a complex world every youngster leaving school needs to be equipped with basic thinking skills. Just being good at argument and critical thinking is not enough.

Thinking is the most fundamental skill. This book provides a clear, easy-to-follow five-stage structure as a framework for thinking, which aims to broaden the ability to respond to and cope with a vast range of situations. The five stages are: the TO stage - where am I going to? - with what do I want to end up?; the LO stage - looking around at the situation - what information is available and needed and what are the perceptions?; the PO stage - generating possibilities - setting up alternatives and new ideas; the SO stage - choosing from among the possibilities - reducing the choices to a line of action; and the GO stage - going ahead and putting thinking into action. |

This text argues that the scientific and technological advances of the last millennium have not been matched by advances in the way we think. The author believes that the emphasis in thinking on what is needs to be changed to what can be if we are to resolve the conflicts of the past. The manual is also an introduction to a very comprehensive coding system which enables us to communicate in a higher order language. Perceptions formed in the past at a stage of relative ignorance are frozen into language and force us to see the world in an obsolete way: this new language allows the creation and use of novel and complex concepts. |

The premise of this book is that in today's rapidly changing world the thinking of the traditional thinkers, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, based on analysis, judgement and argument, is no longer enough. De Bono argues that we need to move towards a more constructive, creative and design-based system of thought. The book outlines the techniques and applications of parallel thinking in both personal and professional life. |

An intriguing little book that explains how to get out of the box and stop suffering from the 'there's only ONE answer to any problem' syndrome.
This book interweaves with other DeBono books like 'Surpetition' and 'Serious Creativity', where PO is mentioned but not explained as completely as here

Language has been the biggest help to human progress. But, ironically, language has also become the barrier to its own development. We are locked in to words and concepts that are limited and out of date. These force us to see the world in a very old-fashioned way. Like any self-organizing system, language has become bogged down in its own equilibrium. The marvellous flexibility of language for description does not enable us to hold complex concepts in our minds. Such concepts exist only while we describe them. The purpose of the two code systems put forward in this book is to allow us to design, hold and use complicated new ideas. since new words would sound bizarre and grotesque, the new concepts are expressed in a number code. This is no different from remembering and using telephone numbers: some you know and others you look up. There are a wide range of codes in this book which help overcome the language barriers in anything from relationships to travel. An important and powerful "pre-code" is also given. The codes presented here are just the beginning of the limitless range of the De Bono Code. |

This text argues that in an increasingly complex world, "simplicity" is going to be a key value. The pace of change is not going to stop so we have to make a conscious effort to make things simpler. Edward de Bono shows that very often a lateral thinking approach can simplify a complex matter. |

People spend vast amounts of money, time and trouble to achieve and maintain beauty, and yet despite its undisputed importance few devote similar efforts to being interesting. Edward de Bono demonstrates in this book, that anyone can acquire this crucial, life enhancing skill. |
