| Larsen & Toubro Limited, Hazira Works, Surat is a reputed modern heavy engineering manufacturing complex which was facing challenges due to inefficient utilization of water. This project focuses on better deployment of our precious resources. The water conservation project was undertaken when the Gujarat government revised water charges from Rs 0.85 to Rs 6.50. Another pressing reason for this project was the need to conserve water, a valuable resource. The project mission was to reduce water consumption by a minimum of 20%. The cross functional team working on the project adopted the Juran methodology and tools for quality improvement. The data on average daily consumption was analysed using flowcharts and cause and effect diagrams. The resulting theories were shortlisted and tested. Based on these theories appropriate remedial measures were undertaken. The result was that water consumption was reduced by 32% and a saving of Rs 125 lakhs per annum was achieved. |
