| School of Management, NMIMS - Bombay, is an esteemed educational institution. This paper focuses on improving the distribution systems of mid-sized companies. The project goal is to encourage mid-sized companies of Indian industry to implement Total Quality Management (TQM) even if it is done in an incremental fashion. The mission being to demonstrate how the implementation of TQM in the physical distribution department of a company could lead to several benefits which would then spur the whole company to put into practice the TQM process. The rationale for choosing the physical distribution department being that this is the department closest to the customer and would make the greatest difference to him. The first part of the paper explains the right approach to quality – process control and reduction of variation. The second part explains the ideal physical distribution programme. The third part is the case presentation of an industrial consumables manufacturing company that represents the typical medium sized manufacturing concern. The last is a hypothetical portion trying to apply TQM to the distribution function alone. |
