| Hindalco, Renukoot is a reputed manufacturer of aluminium. Their project focuses on improving the efficiency of their manufacturing process. The goal was to reduce the hot mill work roll change time. The hot rolling process is the key process in the complete rolling operation. The output from the hot rolling mills decides the final volumes of the flat rolled products. Therefore maximizing hot mill uptime was imperative. This would lead to an increase in productivity, enhance market share, increase profitability and improve overall plant effectiveness. Structured Continuous Quality Improvement tools such as brainstorming, process mapping, cause & effect diagram and pareto diagram were used to identify the root causes based on which appropriate corrective and preventive action was then taken. The tangible benefit to the company was a reduction in average roll change time to 60 minutes from 140 minutes. The intangible gains were an improvement in market share, reduction in operator fatigue and safe operations amongst others. |
