Abstract
Reliance Energy operates a coal based thermal power station at Dahanu. Their project focused on process maintenance of the coal mining process to reduce generation and revenue losses which also impacts the end-user in terms of higher tariffs. The project mission was to reduce coal mill tripping by 50%. Data was collected and analysed using structured Continuous Quality Improvement tools such as Pareto Analysis, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Brainstorming. On ascertaining several causes to the problem, appropriate corrective and preventive measures were undertaken. Among the benefits to the company, the tangible results realized were savings in revenue loss of Rs 47.8 lakh per annum on a recurring basis and reduction in oil consumption by 64 KL. A vital intangible benefit accrued was to avoid any probable power disruption to end users in Mumbai.
