| Vikram Cement is a reputed cement manufacturing company. This project focuses on reducing the high electrical energy consumption which totals upto 14% of the total cost of cement production. The project goal was to reduce specific power consumption by 2.0 units per ton of cement by optimizing the quality of power. A structured Continuous Quality Improvement methodology was followed. Probable causes were identified by using brainstorming technique and the resultant theories were plotted on a cause effect diagram. The team then decided to focus on the theories of power loss due to high/low grid voltage and frequency (grid disturbance) and appropriate preventive and corrective measures were undertaken. The trial run showed a saving of approximately 2.29 units per ton of cement. This saving works out to Rs 63.70 lacs/annum. The intangible benefits were enhanced life of electrical equipments thereby resulting in less failure and a spirit of team work realized by all team members. |
