| Mahindra & Mahindra is the leading tractor manufacturer in India. In recent years the farm equipment sector was facing several challenges in terms of new local and international competitors, new products and price competition. Their project focuses on improving the efficiency of their product development process. A high dependence on field testing has many limitations such as seasonal availability, remote site location and time taken for revalidating corrective actions. These limitations can be addressed by establishing field to lab correlation. The mission of this project was to reduce new product development testing time by 10 percent. The team followed a structured methodology to identify possible and probable causes through brainstorming. Why-why analysis was carried out to identify the root. Thereafter, necessary actions for the root causes were decided. With the refinement of the evaluation process and development of the test facilities, product evaluation was carried out mainly through lab testing. The tangible benefits to the company were that by bringing the field to the lab there was total reduction in the evaluation time by nine percent. The intangible benefits included improvement in testing and evaluation skills and improvement in teamwork and problem solving capability. |
