Abstract
Reliance Energy operates a coal based thermal power station at Dahanu. Performance of the power station in terms of economical generation depends on auxiliary power management. The best option to meet customer requirements is to minimize power consumption for generation of electricity thereby helping in providing economical services to its customers. This project focused on improving service efficiency. The mission of the project was to reduce the variation of average auxiliary power consumption of the air compressor plant by 25 percent without affecting the present requirements of the customer. The team followed a structured methodology to tackle the problem. A brainstorming session helped identify probable causes. Cause and effect diagram helped identify valid root causes. Appropriate corrective and preventive measures were implemented. The tangible benefits of the project were that auxiliary power consumption of the air compressor plant reduced by 0.5 million units for the three months of the control phase which translated into savings of Rs seven million per annum. The intangible benefits achieved were availability of more energy for the end user, reduction in generation cost, and conservation of natural resources like coal, oil and water amongst others.
