| Reliance Energy has a coal based thermal power station at Dahanu. Their project focuses on improving the efficiency of their maintenance process so as to optimize energy utilization. The rationale being that higher consumption leads to a decrease in energy efficiency as well as an increase in auxiliary power consumption resulting in revenue loss for the company. Performance of BFP-2B had deteriorated for the same output over the last six months. A cross functional team short listed several probable causes using structured Continuous Quality Improvement tools like data collection, analysis and discussions with people involved in the operation and maintenance processes. Using the nominal grouping technique three root causes were short listed one of which led to the discovery of a new problem of erosion of the pump’s outer casing. The team came up with the solution of fabricating a jig in-house which could tackle the problem. The tangible benefit to the company was a direct saving of Rs 14.20 million. The intangible benefits were a substantial reduction in equipment downtime, availability of the equipment and reliability of the plant increased, and it led to a boost in the maintenance team’s confidence to tackle new and upcoming challenges and encouraged inherent creativity in the team. |
