Abstract
Sterlite Copper, a manufacturing unit of Sterlite Industries, is a copper smelter based at Tuticorin. This project focuses on reducing cost of production cost by reducing fuel and power consumption. The project goal was to improve efficiency of fuel consumption and reduce it by 15% at the anode furnace area. The team followed the structured Juran Methodology to tackle the problem. The operations at the anode furnace area were studied in detail and flowcharts were drawn up. The ensuing theories were analyzed, plotted on a cause effect diagram and then tested. The proven theories were taken up for remedial action. The result was an astounding saving of Rs 2.2 crores per annum. Some of the intangible benefits were improvement in combustion efficiency of fuel and improvement in communication amongst others.
