Abstract
Sterlite Industries (Tuticorin) is a reputed manufacturer and major producer of gypsum. Customer feedback showed that acidity of gypsum was high which was affecting the setting time of cement. Acting on this information, Sterlite Industries undertook a quality improvement project which focused on improving the quality of gypsum to resolve customer complaints. The mission of the project was to ‘To improve the gypsum quality by increasing the pH from existing 3.0 to 5.0 and to sustain the same on an ongoing basis thereafter.’ The cross functional project team followed a structured Continuous Quality Improvement methodology for data collection and analysis. All the alternatives were evaluated before the team zeroed in on one solution which got them the desired quality of gypsum at the desired cost. The benefit to the company was an increase in sales from an average of 30000 MT/month to 75000 MT/month. Sales were also expected to increase more than a lakh tonne in a month.
