| Sterlite Industries, Silvassa is a reputed manufacturer of copper. Their project focuses on improving the efficiency of their manufacturing process. The goal being to improve the quality of liberator cathode to LME grade-A specifications as poor quality was leading to a piling of inventory and subsequent discounted selling resulting in losses for the company. The mission of the project was ‘To bring impurities in liberator cathode within LME specification and to improve the physical look of the cathodes which will help in reducing the production and inventory of non LME cathode and will result in savings/additional revenue of 3.5 crores/annum.’ A cross-functional team was formed for the project. Based on brainstorming, cause& effect diagram, data collection and theoretical aspects of the process the main concepts and causes were identified. Appropriate solutions were then tested and implemented. The tangible benefit to the company was a saving of approximately 3.9 crore per annum. The intangible benefits were an overall boost in team confidence and a huge sense of accomplishment, better understanding between members of a cross functional team and learning of innovative problem solving methodologies. |
